Laboratory Services

Our team strongly focuses on communication with lab end users and key stakeholders, our design process is centered on the functionality of the lab space. By forming an understanding of the macro and micro needs of the space, we can review how to best create efficient workflows for staff. We do this whilst keeping in mind future growth by designing in flexibility and focusing on the visual and special appeal of the environment.

The John Innes Centre is an independent, international centre of excellence in plant science and microbiology and have occupied the Joseph Chatt Building since the mid-1990s. This initial reconfiguration project modernised the two main laboratory preparation areas within the building to allow the client to offer improved level of services. Under utilised spaces were removed and reconfigured to re-plan the laboratory spaces to suit the current needs of a modern lab and greatly improve efficiencies in workflow. The efficiencies in space usage also allowed for the creation of additional much-needed office accommodation for hot desking and report writing.

our services Ingleton Wood’s involvement in the laboratory sector has consistently grown over recent years. Strongly focused on communication with lab end users and key stakeholders, our design process centres on the functionality of space. By forming an understanding of the macro and micro spatial needs, we can review how to best create efficient workflows for staff whilst considering future growth and flexibility. Collectively across the Practice, Ingleton Wood’s laboratory design experience ranges from clean rooms, pathology labs, healthcare and medical labs through to commercial R&D spaces. We carry out conceptual space planning and feasibility studies and then manage the delivery of projects on site. Laboratory design revolves around the functionality requirements of the space, which in turn informs the architectural design, building services strategy, and structural approach. Through experience, we translate these functions and work with the end users to develop the design – ensuring compliance with the applicable regulations. This extends to selection and specification of finishes, lab benching, power and service connections, circulation routes and health & safety equipment. On every lab project, a vital design tool is the development and maintenance of up-to- date and comprehensive equipment schedules. These are key to our lab design work and referred to continually by all disciplines for the duration of the project. They also aid communication with lab users and facilities teams to understand and quantify space requirements and how to future proof areas.

Working with a UK based diagnostic’s company, Ingleton Wood designed and developed laboratory layouts to facilitate the installation of innovative and new diagnostics equipment in hospital settings. Our design involvement was from initial concept stage through to completion. Due to the nature of the projects, works are carried out in occupied spaces and therefore completed over various phases to enable critical workflows and processes to continue uninterrupted.

Ingleton Wood were appointed directly to work with a global applied genomics technology company, to design and deliver the reconfiguration and fit out of their CL2 Laboratory. The project included a full re-design for the lab layout together with meeting and write up spaces, whilst also upgrading existing spaces to allow economic flow through the suite. Works included addition of fume cupboards and associated mechanical plant.
